Insieme alla tanto discussa Tolkien Encyclopedia, il libro è considerato una delle opere critiche più importanti dell'anno ed è a cura della stessa coppia di studiosi già autori del The Lord of The Rings Reader's Companion (na serie di note al testo che fanno un po' da corrispettivo a ciò che Douglas A. Anderson ha fatto con Lo Hobbit annotato) e di J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator, uno dei pochi testi critici che affrontano la genesi, il significato e l'ispirazione delle opere grafiche di Tolkien.

Il Tolkien Companion si presenta sicuramente come un prodotto di un certo pregio: un cofanetto di due volumi rilegati con copertina rigida, ciascuno di 1.200 pagine circa ed in formato 23x15 cm: la Reader's Guide e la Chronology.
All'interno della Reader's Guide, con sovracopertina in nero e argento su oro, tutto ciò che avreste desiderato sapere su Tolkien ma non avete mai osato chiedere: in ordine alfabetico, tutte le sue pubblicazioni (dalla saggistica alla narrativa alle brevi poesie) e le loro vicende compositive ed editoriali, i luoghi e le persone con cui ha avuto contatti nella sua vita.
La Chronology, con copertina in nero e oro su argento, contiene una curatissima ed imponente cronologia della vita e delle opere di Tolkien.
In poche parole, uno strumento critico fondamentale sia per l'appassionato che per chiunque a sua volta si dedichi allo studio e alla critica letteraria del grande autore, in Inghilterra già oggetto di studi universitari da molti anni.
